Intermediate to Advanced Biotechnology
2005 Summer Institutes

Session 1: June 6 - 10, 2005
Session 2: June 13 - 17, 2005

Printable Application

Are your students ready to learn some basic lab techniques used in the field of biotechnology? The best way to learn about biotech applications is to actually do the science instead of just reading about it.

Many teachers are unable to provide this experience to their students for two reasons:

  1. they have never done this and do not feel comfortable with the techniques and equipment; or
  2. they do not have the necessary materials and equipment.

These workshop will address both of those barriers by providing teachers the opportunity to transform bacteria, digest DNA with restriction enzymes, and perform gel electrophoresis in order to separate DNA fragments. Teachers will also have a chance to do PCR amplification to analyze their own DNA for Alu repeats. Teachers will tour labs and experimental fields where this research is being conducted. To make this experience even more powerful, teachers will learn these techniques contextually through biotech applications in agriculture from Tennessee State University researchers and in forensics from crime scene investigators. Teachers will leave the workshop with a kit they can take back to their classroom in order to repeat most of the lab activities.
